Taking on taboos

Topics like sex education and mental health are still considered taboo in many parts of the country. But twenty-four-year-old Ishrat Naher Erina from Sreemangal in Moulvibazar has taken up the challenge of fostering open dialogue on the matters. She’s been researching the link between sex education and mental health. Her research has attracted international recognition.

Bangladeshi Ishrat Naher Erina has become one of 40 winners of “120 Under 40: The New Generation of Family Planning Leaders” award of Bill & Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Bangladeshi student, Ishrat Naher Erina, has got invitation from Bills and Melinda Gates foundation as a 2017 winner of the 120 under 40: The New Generation of Family Planning Leaders, recognizing and highlighting the achievements of the next generation of family planning leaders worldwide. The event will be hosted from September 18 – 22, 2017 in USA and organized by The Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, USA.

I feel proud and happy to be a part of such a country where a lot of people are involved in community development to ensure a secure and healthy lifestyle. By the process of growing up, I’ve inherited that empathy in my gene that placed me to work on sex education and mental health.
